There is some confusion about the difference between ABBR and ACRONYM tags, on the surface they appear to do the same thing.
From an English language perspective an abbreviation and an acronym are both shortened forms of a word, phrase or name. There are no strict rules about how this shortening is done. In many cases, but not all, the abbreviation or acronym is formed from the first letters of the original phrase or word.
The difference is in whether or not the resulting abbreviation can and is articulated as word. If it articulated as a “new” word, it is an acronym; otherwise it is a plain old abbreviation.
An initialism is an abbreviation of a phrase consisting of the initial letter of each word in the phrase; distinguishable from an acronym in that it is not pronounced as a single word; for example B.B.C. and C.I.A.
The HTML 4.01 Specification (Section 9.2.1) states:
The ABBR and ACRONYM elements allow authors to clearly indicate occurrences of abbreviations and acronyms. Western languages make extensive use of acronyms such as “GmbH”, “NATO”, and “F.B.I.”, as well as abbreviations like “M.”, “Inc.”, “et al.”, “etc.”
As can be seen the inconsistency between the W3′s definition of an Acronym and the dictionary definition may be difficult to determine from the above text.
